Sunshine Oaks Park
A modern playground destination featuring integrated shade, synthetic turf surfacing, freestanding play experiences, and a large play structure designed to serve Madison families for years to come.
A New Destination for Play, Recreation, and Community Gathering
In 2025, Sunshine Oaks Park became one of Madison's newest destinations for outdoor recreation, bringing together innovative playground design, comfortable gathering spaces, and opportunities for active play. Located within the City of Madison's expansive 40-acre park, the project was designed to serve families, children, and visitors of all ages with a variety of play experiences and amenities. The park officially opened in March 2025 and features a large playground, pavilions, green space, restrooms, and access to the Bradford Creek Greenway.
Struthers Recreation was proud to partner on the playground installation, creating a play environment that combines traditional play opportunities with modern amenities designed for comfort, accessibility, and long-term durability.
Large Play Structure Encourages Adventure and Exploration
At the heart of the playground is a large multi-level play structure that invites children to climb, slide, explore, and engage in imaginative play. The structure offers a variety of activities that support physical development while encouraging social interaction and creative exploration.
Multiple climbing opportunities, elevated play components, and slides create a destination that appeals to children across a wide range of ages and abilities. The design allows children to develop balance, coordination, confidence, and problem-solving skills while enjoying active outdoor play.
Integrated Shade Enhances Comfort
One of the standout features of the playground is the integrated shade system incorporated directly into the play area. Shade structures help reduce surface temperatures and provide relief from the Alabama sun, making the playground more comfortable for families throughout much of the year.
By incorporating shade into the overall design, the play area remains welcoming during warmer months while supporting longer visits and increased community use.

Turf Surfacing Creates a Clean, Attractive Play Environment
The playground also features synthetic turf surfacing, providing a clean and visually appealing foundation throughout the play space. Turf helps create a consistent play surface while reducing mud, dust, and maintenance concerns often associated with traditional grass areas.
The result is a playground environment that remains attractive and functional throughout the year, helping families enjoy the space in a variety of weather conditions.
Freestanding Play Elements Add Variety
Beyond the main play structure, the playground includes freestanding play equipment that adds additional opportunities for movement, social interaction, and inclusive play experiences.
These independent play components help create multiple activity zones throughout the playground, encouraging children to explore different types of play while supporting a broader range of interests and developmental needs.

Supporting Madison's Growing Community
Sunshine Oaks Park reflects Madison's continued investment in high-quality parks and recreational amenities. Situated adjacent to the Bradford Creek Greenway, the park provides residents with opportunities for active recreation, family gatherings, outdoor fitness, and community connection. The site also includes pavilions, open green space, restrooms, parking, and an 18-hole disc golf course.
The playground serves as a central gathering place within the park, offering a welcoming destination where children can play, families can connect, and the community can enjoy the outdoors together.
Bringing Exceptional Play Spaces to Communities Across the Southeast
At Struthers Recreation, we believe great parks create lasting community impact. Sunshine Oaks Park is an excellent example of how thoughtful playground design, integrated shade, quality surfacing, and diverse play opportunities can come together to create a destination that serves families for years to come.
We are honored to have contributed to this exciting project and look forward to helping communities throughout Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and the Florida Panhandle create memorable places for play, recreation, and connection.
